Sort fractions around one half

Materials: paper, pencil, scissors, and glue. An adult can prepare the cards, or the learner can point and sort without cutting.

Draw three columns: Less than 1/2, Equal to 1/2, and Greater than 1/2. Copy each fraction below onto a separate paper card. Sort the cards, check your reasoning, then glue them down.

  • 1/4
  • 3/8
  • 2/4
  • 4/8
  • 3/4
  • 5/8
  • 1/8
  • 7/8

Work through one together

For 3/8, write 1/2 as 4/8. Three eighths is less than four eighths, so 3/8 belongs in the Less than 1/2 column.

Check the sort

  • Less than 1/2: 1/4, 3/8, 1/8.
  • Equal to 1/2: 2/4, 4/8.
  • Greater than 1/2: 3/4, 5/8, 7/8.

Choose one card from each column. Draw equal-sized fraction bars to explain its placement. Keep the wholes the same size when comparing.

Adjust the task

Start with four cards and model a second match if needed. Create three more cards: one for each column. For an extra challenge, use a denominator other than 4 or 8 and explain how you know.
