Match equivalent decimals

Materials: paper, pencil, scissors, and glue. An adult can prepare the cards, or the learner can point and sort without cutting.

Draw four columns labeled 0.5, 0.05, 1.5, and 1.05. Copy the eight decimal cards below onto paper. Place equivalent values together, explain a match, then glue the cards in their columns.

• 0.50
• 0.500
• 0.050
• 0.0500
• 1.50
• 1.500
• 1.050
• 1.0500

Work through one together

0.50 means 50 hundredths. That is 5 tenths, so it matches 0.5. By contrast, 0.05 is 5 hundredths and belongs in a different column.

Check the sort

• 0.5: 0.50 and 0.500.
• 0.05: 0.050 and 0.0500.
• 1.5: 1.50 and 1.500.
• 1.05: 1.050 and 1.0500.

Explain why a zero at the end of a decimal does not change its value, but changing 0.5 to 0.05 does. Use a place-value chart if helpful.

Adjust the task

Start with four cards and model a second match if needed. Write a new equivalent decimal for each column. Then order the four column labels from least to greatest: 0.05, 0.5, 1.05, 1.5.
